Jr. Counselor Program - summer

Environmental Adventure Camp Jr. Counselors are an integral part of the summer camp team. The Jr. Counselor opportunity is designed to provide participating youth with valuable life experiences such as gaining leadership skills, building self-confidence, gaining job experience, and learning to interact with children of various ages. In addition to these skills, Jr. Counselors will find the program rewarding as they learn from skilled camp leaders, practice their own mountain biking techniques, continue to enhance their relationship with the natural world, and delight in the daily interactions with children.

Age Requirements:

Jr. Counselors must be between 14 and 16 years of age.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A maximum of two Jr. Camp Counselors per camp session.
  • Responsible individuals who enjoy mountain biking, assisting youth outdoors, and will be a good role model for younger campers.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist camp staff in the supervision of all camp activities, including daily mountain bike rides, natural world investigations, hiking, morning meeting, swimming, group games and lunchtime.
  • Work with staff in running activities and games.
  • Learn to fix simple problems on bicycles.
  • Lead at least one activity during the camp week and participate in an evaluation by the camp director.
  • Assist camp staff in maintaining safety and referring problems to the camp director or assistant, or the assigned staff leader.
  • Participate in the orientation days at the beginning of the camp season and be a part of daily after camp clean up.
  • Work with a wide variety of children who range in age and ability levels. Jr. Counselors should be willing to work with children individually, or in a small group format, to help them build confidence and skills in their chosen task.
  • Have fun!

Expectations:

Jr. Counselors are expected to participate in a minimum of at least two weeks of camp. To become a Jr. Counselor, youth must have participated in a minimum of at least one previous camp session as a camper and have written permission from their parents/guardians. They will participate in all aspects of each camp and are expected to be available for the full camp hours during their scheduled weeks.

Compensation:

This is a non-paid training position. Jr. Counselors receive a complimentary registration to the participating camp.

Application Procedure:

Call Grafton Ponds or The Nature Museum to arrange for a meeting to discuss the Jr. Counselor position.
